BEAT 6 – DOLGWM MILL

OVERVIEW

At Dolgwm Mill, half a mile east of Llyn Pencarreg on the A485, Llandysul Angling Association Beat 6 comprises almost a mile of left bank fishing and nearly half a mile of right bank fishing. Club members have a private car park beside the disused railway track.

There are several deep pools near the upper and lower limits of this beat and a good variety of other fishing opportunities.

Later in the year – generally after the end of June – the sea trout (sewin) arrive. On some of the tree-lined stretches it is possible to tempt them quite early in the evening; elsewhere, flyfishing at night is usually the best approach.

There are some well-shaded pools near the lower beat limit, and they are always a good place to try for a sea trout (sewin).

Elsewhere, there is plenty of riverbank with a clear back cast, and so this is an ideal beat for anyone learning to fly fish.

The fishing extends to more than a mile and includes about 300 yards of double-bank fishing. Our left-bank fishing extends along five meadows, and the upper and lower beat limits are marked by orange signs at fences. On the right bank we have the fishing on one large meadow, where the river makes a sweeping 180 degree turn. Orange marker signs denote the upper and lower beat limits.

We purchased this beat in December 1977.

BEST FOR

This section of the river is renowned for its trout fishing. There are miles of river to explore and you will struggle to acquaint yourself with it in a season. Each twist and turn prevents something new and exciting. Given good running water, sea trout (sewin) will enter this water by mid / late summer and salmon can be found throughout the season. However, this water is best covered on the salmon and sea trout (sewin) front when there is high water, which may prevent fishing downriver.

ACCESS

The access to this fishery is off  the A485 Llanybydder to Lampeter road some 300 yards west of Dolgwm. It is some three miles north-west of Llanybydder on the A485, and is half a mile downstream of the lower limit of our Cefn-Bryn beat.

When we purchased this fishery, we also bought the land necessary to construct a private car park for members. There is ample parking space.

The access path runs beside a sheep-dipping station, via a pair of farm gates. To get to the top section of the beat, turn right via a farm gate. For the lower section of the fishing, continue along the hedgerow down to the river.
