BEATS / MAP OF WATER

OVERVIEW

The River Teifi is the longest river to start and end wholly in Wales, covering a length of around 75 miles – starting high in the Cambrian Mountains and Teifi Pools, before emptying into the sea in Gwbert and Cardigan Bay. Over this journey Llandysul Angling Association has fishing available on some 30 miles of the river; with beats starting in the Cellan area, reaching as far downstream as Newcastle Emlyn. Having such a large portfolio open to you allows you to fish the size of river you prefer from small and intimate on the upper reaches, through to wider and less enclosed on the lower reaches. For an insight into our fishing please take a look at the following sections and then individual beats for further insight.

SECTION A – CELLAN AREA (UPPER REACHES)

These are our upper river beats, which are largely orientated towards trout fishing. These beats are fly only. The beauty of these beats are that given that they are located above Lampeter Bridge the fishing on them begins of the 3rd of March, whereas all beats below this point open on the 1st of April. These beats are also good to explore later in the season for both salmon and sea trout (sewin) and are often worth visiting if the beats lower down are too high or brown to fish, as these beats will recede / clear quicker.

SECTION B – LAMPETER TO LLANYBYDDER AREA (UPPER-MIDDLE REACHES)

There is a vast amount of water to explore downstream from Lampeter Bridge. To begin with there are a few miles of double bank fishing, which is only very lightly fish. There is great habitat here for the trout, but there are also some notable pools worth trying for both salmon and sea trout (sewin), especially in the latter half of the season. Due to the lack of fishing pressure exhibited on these beats, the undergrowth can be thick in places and access limited. As such, please take this into account when visiting. The water is, however, as wild as nature intended and the trout thrive as a result. Historically the Llanybydder area is where grayling have been found, so please do bear that in mind if you are attempting to track down a Teifi unicorn…

SECTION C – MAESYCRUGIAU TO LLANDYSUL AREA (LOWER-MIDDLE REACHES)

Some 10 miles above and 10 miles below Llandysul would be regarded as the prime of the middle reaches. This is some of the (if not the) finest holding water on the whole river. Both salmon and sea trout (sewin) will actively aim for this section, regardless of the time of year of river height. There are numerous named and famous holding pools, the majority of which we are proud to have within our portfolio. From Prysg, Vicar’s and Jack’s, through to Oak, Church, Horse and more. You also have the gorge in Rhydygalfe just below the village of Llandysul, which is quite possibly one of the most famous fishing stations on the whole river. Each beat has a very different feel and we are certain you will enjoy exploring each section and the experiences that they bring.

SECTION D – PENTRECWRT TO LLANDYFRIOG (LOWER REACHES)

At around 75 miles long, the River Teifi is a long river (both the rivers Towy and Teifi are around the same length and are the two longest rivers that start and end wholly in Wales). Llandysul Angling Association has an enviable portfolio, with beats ranging from the upper river to the lower river – each section holding individual appeal and charm. Our lower reaches encompass some amazing water for both salmon and sea trout (sewin), especially for those that like a slightly larger river to cover. Indeed, Beats 13A and 14B are long beats and offer the prime of what the Teifi has to offer, both being great starting points for those new to to the river and club.
