BEAT 8B – COUNTY GATE

OVERVIEW

One of the newer acquisitions to the Association’s portfolio. A relatively short beat, covering one meadow. However, almost the entire length of the beat is fishable and each section does offer something different over different heights.

There is a fairly lengthy walk to access the fishery in the first place, but upon reaching the meadow the ground is flat and most of the water can be covered from the bank, if you wish. There are two famous pools on the beat, with these being the first two that you reach upon entering the meadow on the downstream boundary.

BEST FOR

This is a fantastic beat for both salmon and sea trout; it is probably one of our most prolific salmon beats. There are also some grayling and good brown trout to be found along the beat, but due to the majority of the river being slow flowing here the fishing is best in the evening during a hatch / spinner fall. There are three notable pools along the beat, all being fantastic holding pools for both salmon and sea trout and can be fished with both spinner and fly. The beat does fish best with a spinner during high water conditions, otherwise the pools are quite slow and lifeless.

ACCESS

The Association constructed a sizeable hard-standing car park, with enough room for multiple cars. This car park serves both the County Gate and the Church Farm beats. The car park is located around 100 metres from the bridge over the river on the B4459 road, near the village of Llanfihangel-Ar-Arth.

Upon exiting the car park on foot, turn left onto the road and walk over the bridge. You will see a big house on the right and soon after a farm track leading around the back of the houses. Take this and follow it along for 200 metres or so, before you start to descend towards the river. You will find a gate on your right, which provides access to the field and fishing – please remember to close the latch on the gate. The fishing is what you will find along this field, with the boundary of the field being the boundary of the fishing – it is all right bank fishing.
