BEAT 9 – CHURCH FARM

OVERVIEW

The Church Farm fishery comprises five left-bank meadows at Llanfihangel-ar-arth, including the field immediately downstream of Llanfihangel Bridge; it is particularly noted as a salmon fishery.

Vicar’s Pool, near the top of the beat, is particularly productive during a salmon or sea trout run.

We purchased this beat in July 1988; comprising just over half a mile of fishing on the left bank of the River Teifi at Llanfihangel-ar-arth. The fishing extends along some five meadows. The Church Farm Beat adjoins the Cwm Mackwith Beat (Beat 10 – odds/evens) immediately below, which gives continuous fishing.

BEST FOR

A great mixed species beat. This beat has a few holding pools where salmon and sea trout can be targeted, but also plenty of runs and broken water that form ideal habitat for trout along with the occasional grayling. The beat fishes well under low water conditions or during a falling spate. It is not a noted high water beat, due to the structure and gradient.

ACCESS

There are two access points for the Church Farm Beat. One below from the Cwm Mackwith Beat (Beat 10) and one from above, from the County Gate Beat car park. When parking at the County Gate Beat car park, the fishing begins immediately below the bridge – left bank only. When accessing from the Cwm Mackwith Beat; from the car park, walk back 100 yards or so up the hill. A stile leads to a short path through the woods. Turn right (upstream) and cross a metal footbridge past Ladies Pool, Gravel, Oak Pool and Clettwr Run; you are then on the Church Farm fishery.
