BEAT 11 – DOLGROGWS

OVERVIEW

Dolgrogws is a beautiful and productive middle river beat, spanning some two miles of left bank fishing. The beat is located within easy reach of Llandysul itself, and given the private bridge (a code is required to cross the bridge, which is located on your permit) we have spanning the river above the village you may access the fishery by foot from the village with ease.

We purchased the Dolgrogws Beat in October 1973 (formerly Porth Waters). Then in May 1987 we were able to secure the Farm Yard fishing at Frongoch to link the Dolgrogws fishery to our Cwm Mackwith Beat. All told, and whilst also taking into account the Church Farm Beat above Cwm Mackwith, there is around 4-5 miles of continuous left hand bank fishing to be explored – there is a lot of water to cover and it will take you a season to educate yourself on this section alone.

BEST FOR

A cracking beat for both salmon and sea trout (sewin). It is a revered beat for both species, having many notable and famous pools. There are beautiful pools to fish along the length of the beat and we’re certain you will enjoy fishing it. This is certainly one of the jewels within our portfolio.

There are also some good trout to be found along the beat, but they are rarely fished for in earnest. A warm summer evening will often tempt the trout out to feed, especially if there is a decent hatch or spinner fall.

ACCESS

There are two methods of access to this fishery. The first is about 500 yards north of Llandysul on the B4476, where there is a small roadside car park for built for club members. On the opposite (eastern) side of the road there is a gate leading across the meadow to the club’s suspension bridge. Our fishing starts immediately upstream of the bridge on the far (left) bank.

The second access point is via Dolgrogws Farm; this is located next door to Farmyard Nurseries, with a sharp turning back on yourself shortly after – (Postcode for Farmyard Nurseries is SA44 4RL). At the bottom of the lane is a private car park for club members (there is ample parking for x3 cars).

To reach the fishing, enter the farm gate beside the car park. On the far side of the small paddock is a stile. Thereafter, very steep paths go down to the river – do not attempt this access point unless you relatively fit and firm on your feet. The path to the left takes you downstream past Horse Pool, whilst the path to the right takes you upstream past Wall Pool and Padget’s to Church Pool and finally to Wire Flats and Wood Pool. Above Wood Pool you enter the Cwm Mackwith Beat (Beat 10) – please note that the wood is overgrown and access is not recommended.
